The Edge of Sanity

Darkness approaches as the sun's light slowly dies...
Soon night will be here and the monster will arise...
I must hurry now before he opens his eyes...
And strike this time before, another girl, she dies.

After weeks of tracking I know he is in there...
Seemingly safe in his domain without a care...
In this stately old manor that now is his lair...
Hidden away from the sunlight, yes, he is there.

I feel the presence of evil as I draw near...
I cannot turn back now and give into the fear...
What must be done to stop this demon is so clear...
With the ancient tools I enter, success is near.

From my satchel I remove a sharp wooden stake...
To drive through his black heart before he can awake...
With a cross and holy water for safety's sake...
For if I'm too late my own life will be at stake.

I search for the coffin I am sure I will find...
Entering the dark room typical of his kind...
But it is too late, as I sense him in my mind...
Turning quickly it is a woman that I find.

So he has claimed another before I got here...
She knows what I must do, for I can see her fear...
I can not leave her to this monster's fate, that's clear...
Promptly I drive in the stake taking her from here.

To lay you to rest, I finish the task begun...
Down by the river, away from the accursed one...
Cut off her head, her mouth stuffed with garlic when done...
And the act of redemption from hell is begun.

I sink her body in swift running water now...
With rose petals secured, in place, over each brow...
Thus keeping her from rising again by my vow...
And another of his army's stopped here and now.

I light a candle, with a prayer to protect me...
Invoking the rites passed down through humanity...
While my mind struggles on the edge of sanity...
Thinking of this burden which has befallen me.

But now darkness is full, too late to go back there...
I return home and at the news headlines I stare...
They warn of a new serial killer, "Beware...!"
But I know it's the vampire, who's still out there.
